Information prior to consent for tattooing
In accordance with French regulations, the following information is provided to allow you to give free and informed consent to the tattoo procedure.
Hygiene conditions during the tattoo procedure
The area of skin or mucous membrane to be tattooed must be healthy, clean, and free from lesions. It is systematically cleaned and disinfected prior to the procedure.
The tattoo artist wears single-use gloves that comply with medical device standards (CE marking). Gloves are changed between clients and after any potentially contaminating action. Hands are washed with a disinfectant before putting on gloves and with soap after removal.
Equipment used
All equipment that penetrates the skin barrier or comes into contact with the client’s skin or mucous membranes is sterile and single-use. When single-use equipment is not available, it is sterilized in accordance with applicable standards.
Direct supports for the equipment are also single-use or sterilized. Equipment that does not come into contact with the skin, mucous membranes, or sterile instruments is cleaned regularly using an appropriate detergent-disinfectant.
Decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization
Equipment is decontaminated immediately after tattooing by immersion in a detergent-disinfectant solution, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Instruments are never left soiled and exposed to air.
Cleaning is preferably performed using an automatic instrument washer. If manual cleaning is required, a soft brush and suitable solution are used, possibly complemented by ultrasonic treatment.
After drying, instruments are individually packaged and sterilized using saturated steam at 134 °C for 18 minutes in an autoclave compliant with NF EN 13060 standards. Sterilized instruments are stored in a clean, dry place away from light.
Heat-sensitive equipment undergoes high-level disinfection by immersion in an appropriate disinfectant.
Products used
The tattoo artist commits to using only inks and products that meet all health safety requirements. Cleaning and disinfecting products comply with current regulations and are used according to recommendations.
Cleaning of premises
The premises and furniture are cleaned at least once per day using a detergent-disinfectant product, starting with the cleanest areas and ending with the most exposed.
Traditional tattooing
Tools used for traditional tattooing are strictly personal. The materials used do not allow for reliable sterilization for repeated use. In keeping with tradition, these tools are given to the tattooed person after use.
Tattoo-related risks
Tattooing involves puncturing the skin to introduce pigments. Each puncture creates a lesion that may become infected or transmit bacterial or viral agents. The risk exists during the procedure and throughout the healing period.
Aftercare and recommendations
After tattooing, the tattooed area should be washed with an antiseptic soap and protected with a sterile dressing. Sun exposure and swimming in the sea or pools should be avoided until complete healing.
If abnormal reactions occur, such as fever, malaise, significant pain, or widespread redness, a physician must be consulted. Alcohol and toxic substances should be avoided during the healing period.
